BIGBLOGG said it, we reported it, and now it’s officially official; the MINI One D is returning this Autumn. That’s right, the original MINI diesel will rising like a Phoenix from the flames, returning once again to conquer the European small car market. At least, we imagine that’s something along the lines of what BMW hope will happen.
The new MINI One D is, as previously reported, based on the rather cracking MINI Cooper D. The engine has been turned down a couple of notches to offer improved consumption and a lower power output. The MINI One D has a peak power output of 90 hp (66 kW) at 4,000 rpm and the maximum torque level of 215 Nm is achieved at an impressively low 1,750 rpm. On paper these figures suggest a nice smooth power band, which could be useful in the kind of commuter traffic the MINI One D is aiming for.
In terms of performance, the figures reflect the entry level status of the MINI One D. 0 to 62 mph takes a relatively docile 11.5 seconds. Top speed is a claimed 113 mph, which should be more than enough, especially in the UK where the maximum limit is 70 mph.
The MINI One D comes with the full array of MINIMALIST technologies. Brake Energy Regeneration, Auto Stop Start and Shift Point Display are all present and correct. This combined with a light weight, technologically advanced engine and six speed gearbox helps the MINI One D return 72 MPG on the EU test cycle and CO2 emissions are 104 grams per kilometre. If these numbers appear familiar, then top marks to you, as they’re exactly the same as those offered by the MINI One D’s more powerful bigger brother, the MINI Cooper D.
In terms of specification and trim the MINI Cooper D will offer a mix of the MINI One and the MINI Cooper D. Trim level and specification will be a match for the MINI One in all but tail pipe trim, which will be shared with the other MINI diesel. Prices, and even a UK release, are as yet unconfirmed. With the launch date set for September 2009 we shouldn’t have to wait too long to find out.
