MINI’s UK market share continues positive trend

MINI sold more new cars in July 2009 than they did for the same month in 2008, a positive result many see as part of a wider trend reflecting the success of the UK’s vehicle scrappage scheme. This is according to figures released today by the SMMT, Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders.

While MINI dropped out of the top ten sales for the historically quiet month of July, they remain in the year-to-date top ten, positioned between the BMW 3 Series and Audi A3 models at number 9 in the charts.

During the month of July 2009 2,816 new MINIs were sold, representing an 11.66 percentage increase on July 2008’s figures of 2,522 vehicles sold.

MINI’s July market share of new cars sold in the UK also improved like for like. The MINI represented 1.79 percent of all new vehicles sold during July 2009 in the UK, compared with 1.64 percent for July 2008. Interestingly, this is still a decrease in market share compared with last month, when MINI’s new car sales represented 2.65% of all new vehicles sold in the UK.

For the year to date, MINI have sold 20,238 new vehicles. This is still down by a significant amount (24.17 percent) on last year’s year to date figure for the same time frame. Last year from January through to the end of July MINI had sold 26,688 new cars, which represented a market share of 1.91 percent.

The 2009 year to date figure of 20,238 new MINIs represents 1.87 percent of the market. While this shows a small fall in total market share, if the improvements seen in recent months continue through August and September, MINIs UK market share could well see a year on year improvement.

The recent UK launches of the new MINI First and MINI John Cooper Works Clubman models may help with the sales push into the second half of the year.
