MINI breaks German monthly sales record

BMW sales figures for June 2009 once again represent a mixed bag for the German automaker, coming a day after it was revealed MINI’s sales in the UK had broken into top ten for the year to date.

Globally MINI sales were down for June 2009 compared with the same month last year to the tune of 8.9%. 22,273 new MINIs hit the road in June 2009 compared with 24,452 in June ‘08.

For the first half of 2009 MINI sold 101,534 units, down 19.9% on the same period of 2008 when 126,810 new MINI vehicles were sold. This is in line with the BMW Group as a whole, for whom BMW, MINI and Rolls-Royce sales combined were down 19.5% year on year at 615,454 vehicles.

BMW Group in Germany sold more MINI and BMW vehicles in June 2009 than June 2008 (up 15.4%). MINI’s sales figures were impressive, with 4,363 cars sold during June 2009, up 45.5% on June 2008’s figures of 2,998. These numbers represent the single best selling month for MINI in Germany since the car went on sale in 2001. However it isn’t all good news in Germany where year to date sales for the BMW Group are down 8.8% compared with last year.

MINI USA reported sales of 4,105 vehicles during June 2009, down 21.2% from the 5,211 cars sold during June 2008. For the year to date MINI USA recorded 20,885 sales, a decrease of 20.9% compared to the 26,400 MINIs sold during the same period of 2008.

While 2009 sales of MINI vehicles remain lower in most cases than their 2008 counterparts, the rate of decline appears to be slowing. BMW can claim to be increasing market share in most markets and they even state they were “easily able to maintain top position as the best-selling premium automobile brand in the U.S”.

Ian Robertson, Member of the Board of Management of BMW AG, responsible for Sales and Marketing gave the following response to the latest sales report from the company:

There are first indications of a slight recovery on the automobile markets. It remains to be seen whether this trend will be sustained. With 12.7%, the BMW Group saw a much smaller decline in sales volumes in June than in previous months. In the first half of the year we were able to gain market share in the global premium segment, as we had planned. With a decrease of 18% in the second quarter, we also performed better than in the first, where sales were down about 21%.
