After the Coupé: The MINI Roadster

This week the internet has been abuzz with photographs, video, and Photoshops aplenty of the new MINI Coupé Concept.

Opinion has, perhaps unsurprisingly, been divided following the unveiling of the new MINI Coupé Concept. On MINI blogs, forums, and other motoring websites the new car, which is a clear indication of a future production model, has set tongues wagging and drawn both fierce criticism and praise in almost equal measures. Which is a good thing. Love it or hate it, the Concept has got people talking, people talking about MINI, and that’s a victory in itself.

Now it looks like MINI are on the brink of stealing more headlines thanks to the design team in Munich. Edmunds.com have grabbed some intriguing exclusives this week, apparently courtesy of MINI themselves at a 50th Birthday celebration in France.

First of all, Edmunds claim that BMW have made it official the production version of the MINI Crossover concept will NOT be taking a bow at the forthcoming IAA Frankfurt Motorshow as widely expected.

Speculation as to why this apparent change of heart has occurred varies; but it seems now the “big” new MINI is destined to make a US debut in production form. Which seems apt, as it would appear that the US is the largest target market for the new MINI Crossover.

The other news comes in photographic form, so you’ll have to pop over to Edmunds to witness it first hand. They have been handed a photograph of an official sketch of the forthcoming MINI Roadster Concept. Which, they say, will go into production and on sale in 2011 alongside the MINI Coupé with which it shares many parts.

The MINI Roadster images you see here are illustrative mock ups based on the official MINI Coupé Concept images and the sketch of the Roadster shown over on Edmunds. But we still hope you like them.
