MINI was the seventh best selling car brand in the UK over the course of September 2009, and also became the seventh best selling car on UK roads for the year to date. This is according to sales figures released by the SMMT.
September is historically a strong month for new car sales, and 2009 has proved no exception. With the aid of the UK Government’s car scrappage scheme new car registrations for September were up 11.4% compared with September 2009.
MINI’s UK sales improvement was more than double of that of the industry as a whole. An increase in sales of over 1,500 vehicles, from 7,116 during September 2008 to 8,634 in the same month of 2009 represents and impressive 21.3% rise.
For the year to date, MINI has now sold 29,790 vehicles in the UK. This is a decrease of 14.42% compared with the 34,810 new MINIs sold over the same time frame in 2008. More encouragingly, MINIs market share for the year to date is up. True, 1.96% compared to 1.94% is hardly an earth shattering spike, but it could be a sign that things are genuinely starting to look up for MINI in the UK market.
All this has certainly got to be music to the ears of MINI UK, after August MINI sales proved to be rather flat to say the least.
For MINI as a global brand the month of September brought mostly positive news. The MINI One had very strong sales in particular, to help MINI shift 24,759 cars worldwide. That figure represents a 9.5% increase on sales of 22,619 for September 2008.
For the year to date global MINI sales for 2009 are still 12.6% behind the same timeframe during 2008. MINI has now sold 161,638 vehicles in 2009, compared to 184,915 cars during January to September 2008.
